When Serious Injuries Strike, Experience Makes The Difference

It happened during the first football game of the season for standout athlete Josiah Crutchfield. As the Memphis University School cornerback tackled a player on the opposing team, he came down hard on the player’s heels. As soon as he jogged away from the field, Josiah knew something was wrong — the pain was excruciating.

A trainer told Josiah’s parents that he needed to go to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. When the Crutchfields arrived at the region’s only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, it became apparent that Josiah needed emergency surgery. The teen’s pancreas had been torn in two.

Josiah underwent three complex surgical procedures guided by a team of pediatric experts who all specialize in the care of children. Seventeen days later, Josiah was headed home on the road to recovery.

“We had a wonderful experience at Le Bonheur,” said Josiah’s mom, Robin. “I know that might sound crazy because of what we were going through, but they really worked hard. I have gotten nothing but quality care every time we’ve gone to Le Bonheur.”

Thanks to the expert care he received from Le Bonheur’s extensive team of pediatric specialists, Josiah returned to school a month later, and was soon back on his game.
