Le Bonheur’s Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) recently received the 2012 Beacon Award for Excellence. Le Bonheur’s unit is the first pediatric CVICU in the region and one of a few CVICUs in the country recognized with the award.

Presented by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), the gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes, provide exceptional patient care and align practices with AACN’s standards for a healthy work environment.

Le Bonheur’s CVICU met the AACN criteria in the areas of leadership structures, appropriate staffing, staff engagement, effective communication, evidence-based practices and patient outcomes, among others.

“We provide excellent care for our patients and families, and this recognition ensures families they’ll continue to receive the highest level of care here,” said Chief Nursing Office Kathie Krause.

CVICU Clinical Director Whitney Smith said, “The process of examining our structure and procedures to determine what needed to change made the experience meaningful. Moving forward, I believe our patients and families will feel a positive difference in the level of care they receive here.”
