Editor's Note: In an effort to show the perspective of various people at Le Bonheur, we have introduced a series called A Day in the Life.  Each entry has people explain their role and relationship with the hospital, in their own words, and illustrate through pictures.  Today's A Day in the Life post, by Allison Dilzell, RD, LDN, CNSD, follows our registered dietitians, and is part of our on going celebration of National Nutrition Month.

Clinical Dietitian

For those of you not in the know, yesterday was the 4th annual Registered Dietitian Day! In honor of the day, I would like to give you some insight into what we do on a daily basis. The first thing you should know is that we cover almost every area at Le Bonheur - even the ED when the need arises (not often, but it happens)! Our department has 13 dietitians, 2 lactation consultants and 3 formula techs. All of our dietitians have areas of expertise including neonatal, critical care, cystic fibrosis, inborn errors of metabolism and diabetes, just to name a few.

Our main role is to make sure our patients receive optimal nutrition to grow adequately. As a valued member of the medical team, we help guide the patient’s feeding by choosing the right food, formula and feeding method. And once the patient has been discharged, our job is still not done. Every day we field phone calls and e-mails from the parents of our patients. It’s not uncommon to encounter obstacles after discharge - we’re here to help them through it.

Most of us cover outpatient clinics in addition to the inpatient floors. Le Bonheur is proud to offer many clinics to treat the complex medical needs of our patients. Some of our clinics include Diabetes, Spina Bifida, Surgery, Renal, Cardiology, Neurology and our own Nutrition clinic. Our work in the clinics can range from educating a family on losing weight to working with a patient with feeding disorders. It keeps life interesting to say the least!

Although our job can have its frustrations at times, we all feel very fortunate to work with children. There is nothing more rewarding then to watch a child grow and thrive and knowing that you had a part in it.
