In light of today’s tragic news, we wanted share some helpful tips from Child Life Director Thomas Hobson. Below, he shares information about how to talk to your kids after a tragedy and help them cope with disturbing news.

Parents and caregivers can help children/adolescents who experience trauma by allowing them to openly talk about what happened and express their feelings.  It is important that children are reassured that their feelings are normal and OK to have after a traumatic event.  It is also important to help children feel safe and secure in their environment by maintaining normal activities, rules and routines in the family system.

Make sure that you are aware of how much your child is being exposed to the news via the Internet, radio and television.  Parents should provide children and adolescents with age-appropriate information and answer questions/concerns about the trauma. It’s important to be honest with your child, but not to provide them with more information than he needs.

You know your child and his reaction to these terrible events.  If he or she is having a difficult time, don’t be afraid to talk about it, and don’t worry if you don’t have the “right words.”  Most people don’t know where to start, but the important thing is that you do.  Also, listening goes a long way.
