Corey Johnson, chaplain at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, received the Henry Logan Starks Award for Outstanding African American Alumni of the Year from Memphis Theological Seminary. This prestigious service award is presented to a leader whose extraordinary service has had a major impact in the community and whose life exemplifies the vibrant leadership, courage, and integrity exhibited by Dr. Starks.
Corey joined Le Bonheur this fall. He came from Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown, where he was a chaplain CPE resident. His career includes work as a pastor, teacher and leader in a youth international relief agency. His work responding to natural disasters like tsunamis or Hurricane Katrina have taught him how to work well in crisis situations, he said.
"Ministry is mission work," Corey said. "Helping people is what I do. It's a different part of the mission work, but it's still ministry."
