During the first year, interns will spend six months in inpatient care, one month in the emergency department and one month in an acute care clinic or urgent care clinic. The interns will also spend some time working outside of Le Bonheur. One month of outpatient responsibilities will consist of adolescent healthcare in two large high school clinics and a neighborhood clinic, and one month will be spent in a community pediatric rotation. Other sites include primary care clinics and the neonatal intensive care unit at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis.
The interns are supervised by second and third year residents, and at the end of the year, the interns will become supervising residents as well. Pediatric medical residency programs last three years and Internal Medicine/Pediatric programs are completed in four years. Upon completion, physicians may choose to apply for a fellowship in order to specialize in specific areas, such as pediatric cardiology or emergency medicine.
