Dr. Poorna Subramaniam joined Pediatric Anesthesiology P.A., the Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center's private group of anesthesiologists, in October after completing her residency and pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston. She is also board certified in anesthesiology. “I love working with kids,” said Subramaniam. “It is very rewarding. They are much smarter than you think. I find their innocence and honesty endearing.” Subramaniam is also interested in the field of neonatology. “It’s amazing to see the number of preterm births today, as compared to 10 years ago,” she said. “Correspondingly, pediatric anesthesiologists are taking care of more neonates. This brings with it a unique set of challenges.” Subramaniam was fully trained in anesthesiology in India. She came to the United States after getting married, and observed at Le Bonheur for a very short time. Then, she moved to Baltimore to do her transitional year internship at the Harbor Hospital Center-University of Maryland and then to Boston. At the end of her fellowship in Boston, she was hired by Le Bonheur and moved to Memphis. “The anesthesiology group at Le Bonheur brings a wealth of experience and knowledge, having been trained in different parts of the country,” she said. “There is a lot of stability with most members having worked here for many years.”
