Opportunities for fellowship training in pediatric pharmacotherapy and metabolic support are also available through The University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Le Bonheur Childrens Medical Center. The fellowship is a directed, highly individualized, postgraduate training program designed to prepare the participant to become an independent researcher. In contrast to a residency, where the emphasis is on the development of practice skills, a fellowship is focused on the development of research skills.
The fellow will spend the majority of time involved with research related activities. This will include protocol development and implementation, data and sample collection, laboratory based activities, statistical analysis, and development of oral and written communication skills. Abstract submission and development of poster and platform presentations for scientific meetings are a priority.
In addition, the fellow will make application for extramural funding of a self initiated research project that may be clinical or laboratory based, depending on the interest of the fellow. Post-graduate courses in statistics, scientific writing, and advanced pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are available. A small component of the fellowship program will include clinical practice related activities, including service call.
