One thing that makes the residency program at The University of Tennessee and Le Bonheur Children' Medical Center stand apart from other training programs is the opportunity to interact with students and faculty in a variety of settings. PGY1 and PGY2 residents have the chance to co-precept students on many of the rotations at Le Bonheur. Both the pediatric and neonatal elective courses allow the resident to develop expertise in the preparation and delivery of didactic lectures. In Applied Therapeutics, a weekly small group discussion class, the resident works with a faculty preceptor to teach students case presentation skills, disease state management and the development of care plans. Weekly pharmacy journal clubs require residents to analyze current literature and develop the ability to apply this information to patient care. The PGY2 resident is expected to take a leadership role in all the teaching exercises.
