Gearing Up For Safety through the Eyes of a Tween
What:
To celebrate Safe Kids Week 2008 (April 24 - May 7), Safe Kids Mid-South, headquartered at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, is hosting a Safe Tweens Photography Contest
Why:
To strengthen Tweens' awareness of their own safety and to see what they see as safe and unsafe situations, environments and behavior in the community in which they live, go to school and play.
How:
Tweens will take pictures (in color) of situations that they consider to be safe and corresponding pictures (in color) that they consider to be unsafe. Situations may be real or simulated but MUST be under the scrutiny of adult supervision.
Who Can Participate:

Individuals may participate - Individuals will work under the supervision of their parent or other adult (i.e., aunt, minister, etc.)

A Tween Class may participate - Students will work under the supervision of their teacher.
What Safety Issues:
In keeping with the theme of Gearing Up for Safety 2008, the injury risk areas that can be addressed through photography include:

fire and burn prevention
-
motor vehicle safety
-
pedestrian safety
-
water safety
-
wheeled sports safety.
When:
Photographs are due to Safe Kids Mid- South on Tuesday, April 15, 2008. Color 4x6" photographs should be placed in a mat. No glue, tape, paste or anything should be used to mount them. On a separate piece of 8 x11" lined paper, a written story should describe what the photographs depict, why the situation is safe or why it is unsafe. This should be typed or printed neatly by the student(s).

In a padded envelope, marked "Do Not Bend", and send by April 18, 2008 to:

One 4"x6" color photo with mat (no glue, etc.) of Tweens being Safe Tweens

One 8"x11" sheet lined paper with short written story of why and how the Tweens are being safe

Judging:
Judging by local safety advocates and experts will be based on clarity of the safety message, how the photographs could increase public awareness of Tween safety issues and creativity.
Prizes:
First, Second, Third Place and Honorable Mention ribbons will be awarded. Photographs and their written stories will be displayed at the Safe Kids and Families FunFest at Bass Pro Shops on April 26 and at future Safe Kids events.
Photographs:
All photographs and written stories will become and remain the property of Safe Kids Mid-South and can be used in future public displays, on products, in print, electronically and/or through the media (See: Consent and Release Form).
