The safety blog, www.lebonheur.org/blogs/safetyblog, is a one-stop shop for the latest information on product recalls, new product guidelines and seasonal safety issues. Susan A. Helms will keep you in the know about child safety.
Susan is a former director of nursing in the Intensive Care Unit at Le Bonheur Children's. Each year, nearly 10,000 children are treated at Le Bonheur because of injury, and nearly 120 children die from accidental injuries in our community.
“Many of these injuries and deaths could have been prevented. But sadly they weren't - primarily because some simple safety habits were not in place. Like the infant killed in a car crash – she was being held in the front seat. Like the toddlers with severe burns – they were playing with matches. Like the 9-year old boy with a severe head injury after a bike crash – he wasn't wearing a helmet,” Helms said.
As founder and director of Safe Kids Mid-South, Susan helps make homes, schools and neighborhoods safer by educating families, providing safety products and creating safer environments. The group also works with legislators to improve safety laws, and its work is helping to make those injury numbers smaller and smaller.
