Questions and Answers from A Leading Provider of Cath Lab Expertise and Services
What does the Cath Lab at Le Bonheur provide its patients?
Le Bonheur's cardiac catheterization lab (often referred to as the cath lab) allows for the testing, diagnosis and intervention of various cardiac diseases. Cardiac procedures that we provide in our state-of-the-art facility include:
-
Diagnostic Pediatric cardiac catheterization – during this procedure, an angiogram, or X-ray movie, is taken of a child's working heart. It will measure intracardiac blood pressure, show exactly where the blood flows and determine if there are any abnormalities of the heart.
-
Interventional Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization – these are procedures performed to improve the functioning of the heart. They include opening narrowed areas with balloons and stents, closing unwanted vessels with coils or intravascular devices, and ablation for unwanted rhythm problems.

-
Angioplasty – a balloon is inflated inside a narrowed portion of a blood vessel to enlarge the vessel and improve blood flow. In children, the angioplasty procedure is used to correct conditions such as coarctation of the aorta or pulmonary artery stenosis.
-
Stent placement – stents are metal tubes used to open blocked or narrowed blood vessels. In cases where balloon angioplasty alone does not have the desired effect, stents are placed to keep the vessel opened.

Cryoablation
-
Radiofrequency catheter ablation
