Le Bonheur's Comprehensive Epilepsy Program is recognized as one of the most advanced epilepsy centers in the country, delivering the highest level of care possible to pediatric patients with epilepsy. Our seven-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) provides a multi-disciplinary treatment approach utilizing the most current therapies and interventions available. In the EMU, continuous EEG monitoring, as well as high density EEG monitoring, with video capabilities allows nurses to keep a close eye on patients.

What is epilepsy?
Epilepsy is defined as a neurological disorder that causes recurrent seizures. Also referred to as "seizure disorder," it can be, but is not always, associated with another more complex disorder such as cerebral palsy, autism, tuberous sclerosis or head injury.

What's Happening at Le Bonheur's Comprehensive Epilepsy Center?

MEG Technology helps detect epilepsy in children

New technology at Le Bonheur now allows neurologists to map brains to better understand and treat neurological conditions such as epilepsy. Only the third pediatric medical center in the country to house a magnetocephalography (MEG) laboratory, the MEG will allow pediatric neurologists to see changes in brain activity in real time, unlike a functional brain MRI or PET scan.

Pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Robert Sanford continues to draw regional and national attention to the Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center's neuroscience programs, including epilepsy, for his patient care and treatment. National referrals for neurology and neurosurgery are up 26 percent.

Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds
Dr. James Wheless, director of the Neuroscience Institute at Le Bonheur was recently featured on ITV's Healthy Body, Healthy Mind TV series discussing epilepsy and the current treatments that are available. Dr. Wheless is professor and chief of pediatric neurology and the Le Bonheur chair in pediatric neurology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He also serves as director of the Le Bonheur comprehensive epilepsy program.
