Neurology and Neurosurgery
Our Neuroscience Institute serves as a regional hub for the evaluation and treatment of neurological disorders in children and adolescents. Neurology refers to that specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system which requires medical treatment, whereas neurosurgery refers to the specialty concerned with nervous system disorders requiring surgical treatment. The neuroscience center provides general pediatric neurology and pediatric neurosurgery services as well as highly specialized interdisciplinary clinical programs.
About 1,500 adolescents and children with neurological problems are hospitalized annually at Le Bonheur. Our pediatric neurosurgeons and neurologists emphasize continuity of care and communication with the primary care physician when treating these patients. The Neuroscience Institute provides ongoing support for children and adolescents with neurological problems including birth defects, degenerative neurological diseases, learning and behavior disorders, brain tumors, seizures, spasticity and traumatic injuries.
