The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 20-bed unit that cares for more than 1,600 critically ill children annually. Our patients are children with various conditions including neurological, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal/genitourinary and orthopedic, complex congenital anomalies, burns, traumatic and accidental injures. Our goal is to provide service excellence as a family-centered care facility. The care is directed by pediatric intensivists who are specially trained in pediatric critical care. Combined, they represent one hundred and fifteen years of experience in critical care. Other team members who will help care for your child include pediatric nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, a variety of pediatric surgeons including general, cardiovascular, orthopedic and world renowned neurosurgeons. All have been trained to care for critically ill pediatric patients. Residents and fellows in training are also a part of the care team. The PICU serves as a regional and national referral center for critically ill children and their families who require the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services. These advanced technologies include high frequency oscillatory ventilation, nitric oxide and heliox therapies as well as Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT). In addition to the services we provide in the unit, the PICU staff understands its responsibility to make its expertise available to others in the community who may play a role in providing care to critically ill or injured children. Our Pediatric Advanced Life Support program trains paramedics and emergency room staff all across the State on proper intervention, stabilization and transport of children. Our Pedi Flite hotline offers 24-hour access to a pediatric intensivist or transport assistance.
