Liver, kidney and multi-organ transplants are performed at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center in association with surgeons at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and the Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute. Kidney Transplantion In many cases of end stage renal disease and other chronic renal disorders, transplantation becomes necessary. Le Bonheur's surgery staff is trained to treat pediatric transplant patients and an experienced team of pediatric nephrologists and transplant surgeons provides care. Liver Transplantation Research conducted by the American Liver Foundation indicates that the incidence of pediatric liver disease is estimated to be as high as one in every 2,500 live births. Many of these cases involve the structure and function of the biliary system and various defects of metabolism and in some cases, transplantation becomes the only course of treatment. Limited donor availability for small children has had devastating consequences, resulting in a lack of appropriate, size-matched donors. During the last decade, several innovative surgical techniques have been adopted to provide suitably sized organs for pediatric patients who require liver transplantation. Le Bonheur is one of only a few pediatric transplant centers with the surgical expertise required to perform these techniques: -
Reduced-size: A portion of a wholly donated adult organ liver is removed and transplanted into a child. -
Living-related: A living adult, usually a parent, donates part of his or her liver to the child. The transplant surgeons at Le Bonheur have extensive experience with living-related liver transplants. -
Split-liver: A wholly donated adult liver is divided into two unequal sized organs. The smaller part is placed into a small child while the remainder is transplanted into a large child or small adult.
