Le Bonheur Magazine - Spring 2008
Meri and Ginny

It has been a little over one year ago that my family and I decided to pull up our Ohio roots and take a bold chance on a new life in Memphis. It is a decision that has changed our lives for the better. Memphis is a wonderful city full of kind and gracious people and Le Bonheur Children’s has become a home away from home and a place where I find purpose and meaning.

Our 2007 accomplishments were numerous and our goals for 2008 are lofty and ambitious. The Feb. 14th groundbreaking for the new Le Bonheur was a significant milestone on our journey to build an optimum environment to provide a better health care experience for all around better care for the children of our region.

I am pleased to tell you the new hospital is on track. All that we have achieved is the result of your support of our mission for a bigger, better Le Bonheur. Thank you for all you have done, and have yet to do, to help Le Bonheur help kids

With this issue, Le Bonheur magazine begins a new direction to present the stories that focus on the many dedicated individuals who have helped to make the new Le Bonheur a reality. We are very proud to feature our friend and local weatherman Jim Jaggers on the cover with a very special Le Bonheur child. Ginny Bargainer was born with spina bifida, and has been a patient here many times in her young life.

During this year’s WREGTV’s Go Jim, Go! campaign Jim and Ginny developed an endearing friendship. Read about it below. There is also a story  about the generous gift from Joel and Wanda Kimbrough for Le Bonheur’s new neonatal intensive care unit. Our new 12-story hospital is being funded by people like Jim, Joel and Wanda who are supporting the capital campaign and who make our work possible.

I believe these stories will inspire and motivate you to get more involved with Le Bonheur Children’s, especially as our new building begins to rise on the corner of Poplar and Dunlap. Together we are building for the kids of our community to make the best even better. We do this great work because we believe in the wonder of children and see in them the possibility that one child can indeed change the world.

Again, thank you for your support of this significant building project and for believing in our vision to become one of this country’s top children’s hospitals. Th is vision would not be possible without friends like you.

With warm regards,
Meri Armour, M.S.N., M.B.A.

Champions for Children: Wanda and Joel Kimbrough
Joel and Wanda Kimbrough understand the feeling of helplessness when a newborn requires treatment in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Not quite three years ago, when their fi rst granddaughter, Emmersen, was born, they experienced what many other parents and grandparents face when there are complications at birth.
Community Celebrates Drive to Expansion
Valentine’s Day 2008 will be an easy one to remember. For decades to come, it’ll be remembered as the day Le Bonheur started building a new hospital.
Family Advisors Offer Insight for the 'New' Le Bonheur
A new council has been organized at Le Bonheur Children’s to further the principles of patient and family-centered care throughout the medical center.
Pedaling for Patients
When WREG-TV Channel 3 weatherman Jim Jaggers was first approached about making a 333-mile bike ride for the kids of Le Bonheur, he was all for it.
Volunteer 'Dreams Up' Art Card Project
Vicky Rodemeyer is on a quest. She wants to teach children to be charitable and compassionate, even if it’s just a few at a time. The Iowa native who moved to Memphis 23 years ago found her calling when she awoke in the night with the idea for Picture Perfect Pony Express, a project she began in 2006.
We've got it Growing On
After years of planning and raising funds for a new Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center, construction begins this month at the corner of Poplar Avenue and Dunlap Street, future home of the new 12-story, 610,000 square-foot hospital.
Young Leaders Lend a Hand
The first meeting of YALL (Young Adult Le Bonheur Leaders) drew a group of 20 which now numbers 100. The young professional support group for Le Bonheur Children’s was organized last year and the founding members of the group are enthusiastically moving full steam ahead.
