Le Bonheur Heart Institute one of eight to earn top STS quality rating
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) again recognized Le Bonheur’s Heart Institute with its highest possible three-star rating. Le Bonheur is one of only eight programs to receive three stars in the Spring 2016 STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database Feedback Report released in June.
The STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database compiles data from pediatric heart programs across the country and publishes surgical outcome information twice a year. Participating programs receive a one– to three– star rating semiannually for cardiac surgery outcomes over a four-year period.
The ratings are based on STS’s mortality risk model, which takes into account the hospital’s number of actual mortalities versus expected mortalities for a certain illness or condition.
“The rating is reflection of our excellence in heart surgery outcomes,” said Christopher Knott-Craig, MD, executive co-director of Le Bonheur’s Heart Institute. “Our program’s average survival rates of the majority of heart surgeries are considerably higher than the national average. We consistently prove to be one of the best places for children needing care for congenital heart disease.”
