Le Bonheur's commitment to providing excellent and the most advanced care for children of the region continues with the establishment of two centers of excellence. The Neuroscience Institute and the Heart Institute are dedicated to the treatment and research of pediatric conditions. Children from all over the region and country visit Le Bonheur each year to be treated at these Institutes. From groundbreaking research to outstanding clinical practice, the Centers of Excellence at Le Bonheur are improving the health status of children in Memphis and the region.

Le Bonheur Comprehensive Epilepsy Program
The Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Le Bonheur is one of the most advanced epilepsy centers in the country, delivering the highest level of care. Brain Tumor Program
Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital founded a joint Brain Tumor Program over 20 years ago that has now become the largest program in the country. 

Pediatric brain tumors are different from those that appear in adults and require specialized brain tumor surgery such as pediatric brain tumor resection performed by our pediatric neurosurgeons. Pediatric brain tumors are classified into one of two categories: benign pediatric brain tumors or malignant pediatric brain tumors. Types of pediatric brain tumors that we treat include:

Our knowledgeable staff of specialists provide excellent cardiac care through the latest techniques and procedures including the Norwood procedure.

Le Bonheur's cardiac catheterization lab (often referred to as the cath lab) allows for the testing, diagnosis and intervention (interventional catheterization) of various cardiac procedures we perform at our state-of-the-art facility. Cardiac procedures that are provided in the cath lab include:

  • Pediatric cardiac catheterization
  • Atrial septal defect (ASD) closure - currently the only medical center in Memphis capable of performing an ASD closure using the Amplatzer™ device
  • Valvuloplasty - a procedure where a catheter is placed in a stenotic aortic valve to be opened
  • Pediatric stent
  • Balloon dilation - a procedure where a catheter, equipped with a special balloon device at the tip, is placed in a stenotic valve to be opened

Pediatric Cardiothoracic SurgeryThe Cardiac Institute at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center is the only pediatric cardiovascular program in the Mid-South utilizing the skills of the region's finest pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons and pediatric cardiologists. The Cardiothoracic surgery team is capable of providing both pediatric surgery and surgical care for adults diagnosed with cardiac disorders as children.  We focus on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels that include:

Le Bonheur is proud to offer advanced pediatric heart surgery procedures such as the Maze procedure and the Ross procedure to its patients.

Le Bonheur recently opened the new Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) designed around the unique needs of critically ill neonatal and pediatric patients with congenital heart defects.

Electrophysiology At Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center, we are staffed and equipped to provide various cardiac electrophysiology services to test, diagnose and treat heart rhythm disorders in children such as arrhythmia and heart murmur. Procedures, tests and services we offer at Le Bonheur include:

  • Cryoablation
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Pediatric Pacemaker Implantation

Non-Invasive Cardiology ServicesThrough the Mid South’s only dedicated pediatric non-invasive cardiology lab, we provide service for children from more than 95 counties in six states, including Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri and Alabama. Non-invasive cardiology procedures, which assist pediatric cardiologists in the diagnosis and treatment of congenital and acquired heart diseases include:

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
An integral part of the critical care program, the ECMO service at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital is designated as a center of excellence by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). This designation recognizes ECMO programs which achieve excellence in patient care, quality, training, education, collaboration and communication.
