Trauma Services
Every year, Le Bonheur Children’s Emergency Department cares for more than 65,000 patients, and more than 13,000 of these children have been involved in major or minor traumas. As the comprehensive trauma center for our region, Le Bonheur is a valuable resource for pediatric trauma victims and receives approximately 1,500 children each year via ambulance or helicopter transport.
American College of Surgeons Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center
Le Bonheur Children’s is designated as a Level 1 pediatric trauma center by the American College of Surgeons. This accreditation is a national designation that requires both high quality clinical care and research in the field of trauma with continued innovation. The ACS Committee on Trauma's verification program confirmed that Le Bonheur has demonstrated its commitment to providing the highest quality trauma care for all injured patients. Le Bonheur is the only accredited pediatric ACS Level 1 trauma center within a 400 mile radius and one of only 33 in the country. Le Bonheur is also designated as a children’s trauma center on the state level in Tennessee and Arkansas.
Comprehensive Care
Caring for the pediatric trauma patient requires people and resources across a large continuum, including multiple surgical and medical subspecialties, nursing and ancillary support, pre-hospital care, rehabilitation services, child and family support services, and community resources. The trauma program at Le Bonheur coordinates these services to provide the best care for pediatric trauma patients. Pediatric subspecialties often involved in trauma care include orthopedics, general surgery, neurosurgery, critical care, anesthesia, ENT, plastic surgery, and emergency medicine.
