Child Assessment Program

The Le Bonheur Child Assessment Team (L-CAP) provides specialized services for child who are suspected victims of abuse or neglect. The clinical team includes a full-time general pediatrician, two nurse practitioners and a licensed master social worker. The L-CAP team evaluates possible child abuse cases, develops a written report for child welfare authorities and works collaboratively with community agencies to assure safe discharge for children.

Additionally, the LCAP team performs medical exams for children who are alleged victims of child sexual assault. These exams are performed on an emergency basis in the Le Bonheur Emergency Department. Scheduled exams are performed at the Le Bonheur Clinic located at the Memphis Child Advocacy Center. Le Bonheur provides this service in collaboration with the Memphis/Shelby County Child Protective Investigation Team.

LCAP services include:

  • Medical evaluation of alleged maltreatment
  • Psycho-social assessments
  • Brief counseling for children, parents, and families
  • Referral to child welfare authorities and/or law enforcement as needed
  • Discharge planning in coordination with families and child welfare authorities
  • Court testimony in response to subpoena
