The arterial switch operation is performed for the repair of a serious but rare congenital heart defect called transposition of the great arteries. This condition is marked by a reversal of the two main arteries that leave the heart. Surgical repair is necessary in almost all cases and involves switching the aorta and pulmonary artery to different sides of the heart. The graph above shows that from January 2014 to December 2017, children who received arterial switch operations at Le Bonheur had a 100 percent survival rate.
