Arterial Switch Operation

badge 1

The arterial switch operation is performed for the repair of a serious but rare congenital heart defect called transposition of the great arteries. This condition is marked by a reversal of the two main arteries that leave the heart. Surgical repair is necessary in almost all cases and involves switching the aorta and pulmonary artery to different sides of the heart.  The graph above shows that from January 2014 to December 2017, children who received arterial switch operations at Le Bonheur had a 100 percent survival rate.

Why this is important: When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening heart defect, finding an experienced care team with a history of consistently positive outcomes is imperative. Le Bonheur is a great choice for your child.

Le Bonheur’s Heart Institute measures quality using data compiled by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, or STS. STS gathers data from other top pediatric heart programs in the country, and publishes that information twice a year. This information helps us benchmark ourselves among other top pediatric heart programs.
