A headache is a broad term that describes head pain. The most familiar types of headaches are migraines, tension or sinus headaches. The severity and location of the pain is often different for each type of headache.

Headaches can be caused by a variety of reasons. Some common causes are poor diet, a history of head or neck injuries, environmental influences or genetics.

Le Bonheur’s Comprehensive Headache Clinic

Le Bonheur is the only children’s hospital in the area to offer a multidisciplinary approach to helping children with severe headaches. Our Comprehensive Headache Clinic is for children who suffer from intractable chronic headaches. This includes those who have:

  • Headaches three or more times a week for more than three months
  • Tried prophylactic medications for more than six weeks
  • Incorporated headache hygiene measures into their daily routines but shown no improvement. For example, the child must have kept a headache diary for at least one month, tried various lifestyle modifications, like minimal or no caffeine intake, exercised for at least 30 minutes three times weekly and eaten three balanced meals a day.

What should you expect during your first visit?

When you bring your child to our Headache Clinic, the physician and nurse practitioner team will document your child’s medical history and perform physical and neurological exams. headache

Your child also will see a psychologist, physical therapist and exercise physiologist on his or her first visit. After being evaluated by this specialized team, a comprehensive treatment plan will be developed, which may include specialized medications, procedures, treatments and headache hygiene management. The clinic also offers trigger point injections, Botox, physical therapy assessment, psychology and biofeedback.

We encourage families to prepare for a long visit. You are welcome to bring snacks, books or small toys if you’d like. Please bring a list of medications including dosage amount and any paperwork regarding guardianship if necessary. Many families find it helpful to prepare a list of questions for our physicians and staff.
