Virginia Fleck: Twirl Blossom

Published On 07/11/2011

Location: Dunlap Street Entrance
Underwriting Cost: $20,000

The new Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital is designed to be environmentally friendly, so it seemed fitting to include artwork by Virginia Fleck -- an artist who has been recognized worldwide for her creative reuse of plastic bags.

Fleck collects bags from all over the world. She sorts all the bags by color and stores them in her studio for later use. Fleck has thousands of bags in her studio at any given time.

Fleck -- who resides in Austin, Texas -- created a piece specifically for the new Le Bonheur’s Dunlap entrance. “Twirl Blossom” is a collage of plastic bags in the shape of a flower growing on a twisting, vine-like stem.

For this project, however, Fleck did not use just any type of shopping bag. “Twirl Blossom” is composed almost entirely of colorful plastic bags collected from children’s birthday parties.

Birthday parties are child's first association with the unbridled joy of celebration.

Growth discovery and celebration are themes artfully woven by Fleck throughout “Twirl Blossom.” Knowing her audience would be primarily children, her intention was to create many humorous visual moments with familiar childhood characters to provide both a joyful sense of discovery and a positive distraction.

Fleck studied art at the Portland School of Art and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her work can be found in prestigious collections throughout the United States and Europe.  An award-winning artist, Fleck has been featured in numerous publications, including Public Art Review, Voice of Germany,, Sculpture Magazine, Artlies!, Metropolitan Home, Western Interiors and Design, Glasstire, Houston Press, Houston Chronicle, Dallas Morning News and the Boston Globe.
