Rheumatology

Rheumatology is the study of diseases characterized by pain and/or inflammation in the muscles, joints or fibrous tissue.

Rheumatic disease includes:

  • arthritis (infectious arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.)
  • back pain
  • bursitis is the inflammation of small, fluid-filled sac that acts as a cushion between a bone and muscles, tendons or skin
  • lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that can affect various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood, and kidneys
  • soft tissue disorders
  • vasculitis is the inflammation of the blood vessels.

Our pediatric rheumatologists are experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and many other musculoskeletal diseases in children. Because rheumatic disorders are often chronic, we will work with your child over a period of time to help him or her cope with the changes these diseases might cause.

We also work with other pediatric specialists, including pediatric ophthalmologists, orthopedic surgeons, nephrologists, rehabilitation services, social workers and psychologists, to conduct research and implement new ways to better help patients.
