Replacement intraoperative MRI system featuring a mobile 3 Tesla scanner enhances precision for complex pediatric brain surgery.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital is advancing pediatric neurosurgical care with the arrival of its new IMRIS Surgical Theatre, featuring a state-of-the-art mobile 3 Tesla intraoperative MRI system designed to enhance precision during complex brain surgeries this past Saturday.
The system will replace Le Bonheur’s existing intraoperative MRI platform and reflects the hospital’s continued commitment to investing in advanced technology that supports the highest level of care for children with neurological conditions.
The investment further strengthens Le Bonheur’s nationally recognized Neuroscience Institute, which has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report among the nation’s leading pediatric Neurology & Neurosurgery programs.
The new IMRIS Surgical Theatre features an innovative three-room configuration centered around a mobile 3 Tesla high-field MRI scanner that travels on demand between two dedicated operating rooms, allowing surgical teams to obtain high-resolution MRI images during procedures without moving patients from the operating room.
By providing real-time imaging during surgery, the system enables neurosurgeons to immediately assess results, confirm surgical objectives and make critical decisions while a procedure is still underway. The technology supports a wide range of complex pediatric neurosurgical procedures, including brain tumor surgery, epilepsy surgery and other advanced neurological interventions.
“This new IMRIS Surgical Theatre reinforces Le Bonheur’s position as a national leader in pediatric neuroscience and demonstrates our commitment to providing children and families across the Mid-South with access to the most advanced neurosurgical technology close to home,” said Dr. Trey Eubanks, President of Le Bonheur.
The system will next undergo installation, testing and clinical readiness activities before becoming operational in 2027.
