Infectious Disease

Our team provides the only comprehensive pediatric infectious disease care in the Memphis area. They treat a wide range of infectious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.

Why choose Le Bonheur Children's?

  • Our infectious disease pediatric specialists are experts in their fields. They’re all board certified (or board-eligible) in infectious disease by the American Board of Pediatrics.
  • Our specialists treat diseases that affect all organ systems, so they partner with many specialists throughout the hospital.
  • Patients have access to a wide-range of expertise at the weekly pediatric infectious disease outpatient clinic – the only program of its kind in the Mid-South.
  • Our physicians are also teachers. As faculty of The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, they’re committed to training the next generation of general pediatricians and infectious disease specialists.
  • Le Bonheur and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital partner to host an Infectious Disease fellowship program.
  • We’re also looking for new ways to treat and cure pediatric diseases. Our physicians research many types of infections, including:
    • pneumonia
    • sepsis
    • meningitis
    • tick-borne infections
    • skin and soft-tissue infections
    • infections caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
    • herpes simplex virus

Vaccines are essential

We believe children need immunizations to protect them from dangerous childhood diseases. These diseases have serious complications and can even kill children. Most children should be completely immunized by age 2 to protect them during the most vulnerable period for contracting disease. Studies and experience have shown that vaccines are safe even when multiple vaccines are given together. All vaccines are licensed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and safety tested by the manufacturer. For more information about vaccinating children, visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s website.

We help patients with many different conditions. Some examples are:

Complicated pneumonias

Unclear cause to illnesses

Bone and joint infections

Kawasaki Disease

Histoplasmosis (and other endemic mycoses)

Tick-borne illnesses

Infections in immuno-compromised children

Infectious mononucleosis
